  • What is the overall purpose of this new facility?
The purpose of the new DSU Athletic Fieldhouse is to provide our students and general DSU community with an indoor, state-of-the-art athletic and mixed-use facility that will allow DSU student-athletes to develop their skills to continue elevating our varsity, intercollegiate sports teams to championship levels of excellence. Moreover, this facility will have mixed-use, non-athletic spaces that will additionally benefit the academic and social needs of the university.
  • What is the projected timeline for this project?
The projected timeline for completion will not be established until we move beyond the design/architectural phase of the project and into the construction phase of the project.
  • What is the cost?
The exact and final cost of this project will not be established until we move beyond the design/architectural phase of the project and into the construction phase of the project.
  • How is the cost covered? Are these dollars that could have gone to other University/academic projects?
The costs for this project are covered through various streams of funding - private donations, corporate donations, and capital improvement contributions from the state. The funds generated for this project will not detract from the funding for other student-centered buildings or projects on campus. This, and all new facility projects are being done to fulfill the academic, athletic, and social needs of our students and the greater DSU community. An example of this can be seen in the fact that the Athletic Fieldhouse is being designed and built on the heels of two academic buildings that are scheduled to be completed before the completion of the Athletic Fieldhouse. The university continues to strategically operate within a very deliberate Campus Masterplan that President Allen previously designed and publicly shared over the past few years.
  • Will the facility be open for public use?
Yes, there will be many spaces within this facility that will be available for public use. Similar to existing facilities on campus, there will also be rental options available during certain times of the year.
  • How will the prefabricated building be integrated with existing infrastructure and future campus development plans?
This transformative building is the first of multiple athletic facilities that will be constructed on the DSU campus as a result of the formation of the Athletic Facilities Transformation Committee. The modern architectural design along with the progressive programs conducted within the facility will be the perfect gateway to other innovative facilities and programs that will soon follow.
  • What are the long-term maintenance and operational costs associated with the prefabricated building, and how do they compare to traditional construction methods?
The maintenance and operational costs associated with this building are being carefully considered by the AFTC, the Project Manager, and the DSU Operations Team. We are confident that all long-term costs will be fully covered in the annual operations budget, the capital maintenance budgets, along with additional revenues generated by the external use of the building.
  • What specific features and amenities will the prefabricated athletic facility include to support the needs of the football team, such as locker rooms, training areas, and meeting spaces?
The DSU Athletic Fieldhouse will be equipped to house and support most of the needs of the DSU Football Team as well as other athletic programs. It will feature home and visiting team locker rooms, individual position meeting rooms, a large team meeting room, office suites for Football coaches, an office suite for the Athletic Director, an indoor turf practice field, a formal atrium for formal gatherings, 3 multiple-purpose conference rooms, the DSU Hall of Fame Museum, a large cafe, and much more.
  • When will the football stadium renovations begin?
The Alumni Football Stadium renovations have already begun with updates such as a new jumbotron state-of-the-art scoreboard, new concession stands, remodeling of both press boxes, demolition and total remodeling of both the home and visitor’s locker rooms, re-painting and renovations of the public restrooms, and more. Additionally, we are planning to launch a more elaborate and all-inclusive renovation project of the entire stadium after we advance into the construction phase of the new Athletic Fieldhouse. This will include new stands and bleachers, installation of premium seating options, additional upgrades that enhance the overall fan experience, and much more.
